How CCC helped Ukraine's Krivorozhstal Plant achieve a step-change in blast furnace efficiency, energy savings, and operational reliability
In steelmaking, blast furnace performance is critical. When control is imprecise or unreliable, results can range from decreased output to catastrophic equipment failures. Steel mills across the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region operated aging turbocompressor systems that lacked automated precision and dependable antisurge protection. This left operations vulnerable to violent pressure instabilities and unexpected breakdowns.
CCC installed a digital control system at Ukraine's Krivorozhstal Plant, Europe's largest blast furnace. The system offered precise speed and pressure control, antisurge protection, and data logging, making Krivorozhstal the first in Ukraine and the CIS to use such technology.
The results were immediate and had an immediate business impact. Furnace blast pressure increased by more than 0.3 bar, resulting in up to 1% production gains, up to 0.5% coke savings, and a 20–40% reduction in dust emissions per 0.1 bar increase. These improvements quickly translated into considerable cost savings and enhanced operational efficiency, allowing the project to pay for itself in roughly six months. Its success drove rapid adoption of similar upgrades across the Ukrainian steel industry.
