Honeywell Partners with Horisont Energi to Support the Development of One of the World’s Cleanest Large-Scale Ammonia Plants
Honeywell’s UniSim® Design and OLI Systems’ electrolyte simulation software to help companies reduce carbon emissions at industrial plants to enhance sustainability
ATLANTA, September 8, 2021 - Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) announced today that Horisont Energi (EURONEXT: HRGI), a Norwegian sustainable energy startup, has signed a license agreement for Honeywell’s UniSim® Design process modelling software to verify and optimize the design of its carbon-free ammonia plants.
Horisont Energi, along with its industrial partners, is developing Europe’s largest blue ammonia facility in the Barents Blue project, to be situated in northern Norway. Blue ammonia is produced from natural gas, like all industrial-scale ammonia today, but with carbon emissions eliminated using carbon capture and storage (CCS) techniques. The captured carbon is safely and permanently stored underground, allowing for ammonia production with minimal environmental impact. The Barents Blue project has a leading criterion that targets greater than 99% carbon capture across the entire transport chain, which would set a new environmental-friendly standard for blue ammonia.
UniSim Design will help Horisont Energi perform technical evaluations of its plant designs aimed at efficiently and cost effectively capturing emissions through steady state and dynamic modeling. Honeywell will work with OLI Systems to seamlessly integrate its industry-leading electrolyte simulation technology that is intended to help customers overcome chemistry-related challenges to enhance sustainability, operational efficiency and asset reliability in industrial applications.
“We are pleased to have selected Honeywell’s and OLI Systems’ software to aid our development of the world’s first large-scale production facility for clean ammonia, one of the world’s most important industrial gases,” said Bjørgulf Haukelidsæter Eidesen, CEO of Horisont Energi. “Our clean energy solutions, supported by the UniSim Design process simulation technology from Honeywell and OLI’s electrolyte modeling package, will help decarbonize a number of industrial processes in line with emerging regulations.”
Many countries are requiring companies to reduce emissions CO2 into the atmosphere, and blue ammonia is a convenient vector for decarbonized energy. Scientific research* implicates man-made carbon emissions as a primary cause for climate change.
“The combination of Honeywell’s UniSim Design and OLI Systems’ electrolyte modeling software brings together strong process technologies and deep chemistry insights to enable companies to transform their plants into more sustainable operations,” said Stuart Morstead, VP and GM for Honeywell Connected Industrial. “We are excited to partner with leaders in emerging green technology, such as Horisont Energi, to help companies reduce their carbon footprint.”
