The Absolute ENCODER index for diaphragm gas meters consists of a mechanical index in which all 8 individual digit rollers are opto-electronically scanned and read out. The data is then continually transferred as a data word via a digital interface to the connected communication modules, whereby permanent data transfer security is guaranteed compared with the conventional transfer of pulses. The operating energy for the diaphragm meter is derived from the gas pressure. Electrical power is required only for reading the Absolute ENCODER and is made available by the M-BUS master in the case of cable-based data transfer. The M-BUS master is integrated in an electricity meter or data concentrator. For this application, no batteries are required. In the case of data transmission by radio, a battery in the communication module ensures the power supply.
The “basic version” of the Absolute ENCODER AE5 is “smart read” and can be retrofitted with cable-based or wireless communication modules even after installation in the network. The communication module is designed as a plug & play solution and is simply plugged into and sealed to the ENCODER index. The connected receiving unit is synchronized automatically. The modular connection between the communication module and ENCODER index enables communication modules to be replaced at any time without additional programming being required. The metrology-relevant part of the gas meter thus remains unaffected. The Absolute ENCODER’s consistent modular design minimizes the efforts and expenditure of installation, commissioning and data provision and ensures investment security for future applications. The following Absolute ENCODER Communication Modules (ACMs) are suitable for fitting to the Absolute ENCODER AE5 and allow for cable-based or wireless data transfer.
The ACM M-BUS WIRE communication module can be connected to the Absolute ENCODER AE5 and enables wired M-Bus communication. The comms module ACM M-BUS WIRE can be connected to an M-Bus master which communicates using the standard M-Bus or M-Bus OMS (Open Metering System). The ACM M-BUS WIRE supports both protocol variants.
M-Bus Standard
• The M-Bus standard protocol in accordance with DIN EN 13757-2:2004 (link layer) and DIN EN 13757-3:2004 for meters and remote meter reading is implemented
• For the ACM M-BUS WIRE to be used in the M-Bus Standard protocol variant\, the AE5 must be factory programmed and delivered in the "M-Bus Standard" variant
M-Bus according to OMS (Open Metering System)
• The M-Bus data transmission protocol to OMS Vol. 2 is implemented; communication is not encrypted
• For the ACM M-BUS WIRE to be used in the M-Bus OMS protocol variant\, the AE5 must be factory programmed and delivered in the "Multi-Protocol" variant
Technical data ACM M-BUS WIRE
• Enclosure: IP 54
• Ambient temperature: -25 to +55 °C
• Connection cable design: 2 m flexible\, two-core LiYY cable\, fireproof pursuant to IEC 60332-1\, cross-section = 0.25 mm2
• The free cable end has 2 wire end ferrules
• Power supply via M-Bus: 3 mA (2 M-Bus loads)
The cable-based ACM SCR WIRE connects the Absolute ENCODER AE5 and the receiving unit with an SCR interface (OBIS code numbers pursuant to OMS). Honeywell can supply compatible data loggers and volume conversion devices. Communication is not encrypted. Note: For the ACM SCR WIRE to be used, the AE5 must be factory programmed and delivered in the "Multi-Protocol" variant.

The communication module ACM 5.X M-BUS RADIO transfers the meter reading of an Absolute ENCODER AE5 on a unidirectional basis to a suitable receiving unit – in Germany, the smart meter gateway. The transmission complies with BSI TR-03109. Data is transmitted in an encrypted form. The ACM is delivered fully programmed. Note: For the ACM 5.X M-BUS RADIO to be used, the AE5 must be factory programmed and delivered in the "Multi-Protocol" variant.
